Successful Ultrasound Scan!

We just wanted to share about our exciting time at the hospital today for a routine ultrasound scan. It was amazing to see the little one in detail and view the appendages that have caused all that bumping around in the womb. Everything is normal and progressing healthily. It took four separate attempts to get the right angle for checking the heart, but the baby finally moved to the right position and the technician was able to capture the beating heart and we saw all ventricles working away. Truly amazing. My favorite part was seeing the tiny fingers and toes! We have some good picture prints from the ultrasound and I will try to get them scanned and posted by the weekend. 🙂

Week 21

TerraWeek21Jason felt the baby kicking yesterday! Monday, I attended a pre-natal yoga class just 15 minutes walk from our apartment. It was nice to spend a couple of hours with other expecting mothers and to have dedicated time for exercise and relaxation. This coming Tuesday, we have a routine sonogram at the hospital, but we’ve decided not to find out the sex of the baby.

Week 20

TerraWeek20I’m still feeling great and enjoying the ever-moving presence of the baby. Movements are still slow and little enough that Jason can’t feel them well yet, but I’ve noticed some strengthening kicks recently. He’ll be able to get in on the fun soon.

Did Ter(r)a change her name?

Many of you have noticed that I’ve begun adding an extra ‘r’ to my name, while others of you have only known me since the time I began this transition. The decision to change (although only unofficially, not legally, at this point) has been a series of events.

First, it is to honour my mother, Terri, who always wanted my name spelled this way but for some reason was not spelled Terra on my birth certificate. Second, and most comically, during my undergrad courses, I learned that Tera, with one ‘r’ means ‘monster’ in Greek. Finally, as I began working overseas, I realized that people outside America had a natural tendency to spell my name Terra, and I found that I quite liked it spelled this way.

You many find it interesting to know the meanings of Tera and Terra. Below are some interesting definitions:

TERA
• is a shielded connector for use with Category 7 twisted-pair data cables
• prefix tera indicates one million million times the quantity (that’s pretty big!)
• a town in the Tillabéri Department of Niger
• the collection, analysis, evaluation and interpretation of geographic information on the natural and man-made features of the terrain

TERRA
• Earth – the meaning we always think of first
• a currency proposed by economist Bernard Lietaer
• a primeval Roman goddess
• a butterfly genus
• a research satellite launched by NASA in 1999

So for those of you who have known me a long time and find it awkward to spell it differently, please continue in the old way.
I’ll still answer to both 🙂

Week 18 – The Quickening

Week 18Our little munchkin has been causing Terra bit of discomfort as it has learned how to move from left to right stepping on Terra’s bladder while in transit. This week has seen the belly grow out by a half an inch. I find Terra chitter chatting about only to realize she is having a conversation with the munchkin due to its movement.
