Nescient, Benighted or Just Morons?

WARNING: This is a political post so feel free to skip this tirade.

I spent much of the day in meetings at the University today. Because I am American and the US Presidential Primaries get as much attention here as Britain’s own political process, I am constantly peppered with questions about the US’s ongoing political diatribe. Of course, many of the comments are great jokes about the nature of American politics with many of them assaulting the ignorant voter. It seems that the world is much more educated about our political process and our future leaders than our own citizens.

Generally, I am a staunch defender of American politics. While I dislike the two party system and advocate for the removal of the Electoral College and its primary equivalent of super delegates, there are few other systems that allow for stable dialogue. Today, after continuing in my familiar argument I was shown this video in my professor’s office.

Obama Faces Racism in West VirginiaFunny home videos are a click away

I was beside myself at the ignorance of these people in this video. While I understand it is propaganda, I do get the feeling that the videos are genuine. This is not the first example I have seen and it is becoming harder and harder for me to defend.

Frankly, I am sad for America. The future is not a bright one with the current slate of possible future leaders.

Hillary is the worst candidate the Democratic party could have put forward. She is a divider in her own party and comes with 20 years of being demonized. How can a person that elicits such a combative attitude be good for our country? I will ignore all I dislike about her and simply point to the fact you love her or hate her and that is not good for the US should she become president.

I am very sad as McCain is proving to be a rich man with mediocre ideas who will continue in the vein of rewarding a few at the expense of many. Only 1 in 4 people can stand GW’s policies yet 50% of the country thinks that McCain has different policies? Are the UK newspapers really that different than the news people read in the US? How uncritical can a population be?

Of course, you must think I like Obama and of course I do not care for him any more than I care for Hillary. People want to believe in him to get something fresh and new but sadly the 44th President is destined to fail with an international policy that cannot be changed in 4 years without causing even more mess than GW has caused.

Am I the only one that shares this great frustration with the ruling class in the US? We are supposed to be an educated people in regards to politics and our leaders yet people have no critical analysis skills to see the truth from the falsities. How can United States of America be for the people, of the people when there seems to be a huge percentage of nincompoops in our population?

Simply put, I am proud to be an American but I am sick and tired of defending idiocracy. I will lay my life on the line to allow someone to express an opinion but I draw the line when that opinion comes from prejudice, hate and ignorance. Sadly, the US is going to continue to be the laughing stock of the world as it is easier and easier to see our simpleton citizens splashed in all their illiteracy on the world wide web.

Here ends my time upon my soap box. If you think I have it right or wrong, throw a comment below!

Do You Trust Your Hard Drive?

Your hard drive will crash

My classmate, Stuart, had his Mac Book (his personal laptop), die a very quick death. His hard drive “crashed” meaning the computer could no longer communicate with it. This will impact me as he had files and information for our Management Consultancy project as we are group mates. I feel bad for him because he lost all 3 of his papers and he was almost finished. He will have to do a full semesters work in about 10 days to hit our looming deadlines.

This is not a major problem other than the fact he did not back up his data! My dear friends and family, if you have any information on your computer you cannot live without and there is only one copy of said material, I beg of you to buy a packet of CDs or an external hard drive and back up your information.

How to back up

Before you get to alarmed, you need to answer the question, “Do I have information I cannot replace on my computer?” If the answer is no, you have no problems. If you are worried about your emails, you only have to worry if you download them to your computer using Outlook or a similar email program. If you use AOL or another email service, generally, you will have no problems. This only pertains to information on your computer (aka your hard drive).

Backing up your information is very simple. There are numerous methods to do it. Here are a few articles which I recommend you look at.

  • Windows XP Backup Made Easy – This is old information but a good place to start.
  • Back up to Email – If you have a large email account or want to create one at Gmail.com, then you can use this to back up your files. I do not recommend this for financial data.
  • This is how we back up – This is a bit complex but I do not trust anyone with my data and I do not trust my computer not to break. All our important information is digitized and we run weekly (if not daily) back ups to push the information to external hard drives. From time to time, I encrypt the information and place it on space I rent on a computer in Michigan.
  • For just a little bit of information (under 5 Gigs) – I would use Mozy. If you have $50 a year and want the peace of mind, especially for your financial data, I would recommend you give Mozy a try.

If you have questions and are interested in setting up a backup system, send me an email and I can point you in the right direction. I cannot impress upon you enough the importance of taking care of your data. Your hard drive will fail, it is only a matter of time until it goes.

Enough procrastinating on my part, back to preparation for my strategy exam!

Time in Parent Mode

Here is an entry I wrote in Week 1 of Anoush’s life with us, but never posted.  Though you might enjoy reading it and the update below.

Nobody warned me that parents have a different time dimension than the rest of the world.  Anoush has been here a week already, and I honestly don’t know where the days went!  We enjoyed watching the clock yesterday, saying things like “this time last week my water broke” and “by now, she was already here!”

This has likely been the fastest week of my life.  Couple this with what one woman called “placenta brain” (that scatter-brain state of new mothers) and I literally find myself walking in circles because I’ve forgotten what I was doing…constantly distracted by all the baby stuff scattered around our apartment that needs to be put back in place.

This new concept of time is intimidating for someone who has two assignments and a book review to write and a dissertation to tackle by September 15!  I find myself wondering if I will make it.  I believe, however, that as we become accustomed to having Anoush in our lives that we’ll somehow manage to find a rhythm and schedule that will help us return to some state of normalcy.  If I’m wrong, don’t tell me because it’ll make me panic!

Any tips or reassurances?

Thankfully, since then things have gotten easier.  I’m dealing better with all the baby items, now that they all have a proper ‘place’ in the apartment.  Having Mom and Dad here for a week was a great help, and now Jason’s classes are finished, so he’s here most of the time.  Having an extra set of hands and arms in the house is tremendously helpful!

Anoush is doing very well.  She’s gaining weight and up to 7 pounds 5 oz at her last weigh-in, which was a week ago.  She had a check-up at the hospital for her prolonged jaundice which has since cleared up and the Dr. is happy with her current state.  We go for our six week check-ups on Friday and I will also take her to the hospital the same day for an ultrasound of her hips.  This is common procedure for breech babies.  The paediatrician checked her out already and is confident she has no problems, but according to protocol had to refer her for the ultrasound check.  She is spending long periods of time awake now, just gazing around.  She loves staring out the windows and is drawn to sources of light.  She’s managing to get her fists and thumbs into her mouth from time to time (no pacifier yet).

I’m also doing quite well and feeling more like myself each week.  Today I will finish the second of three term papers.  I’ve taken Anoush to the university a few times for meetings and presentations and she’s done fantastically well.  As long as she’s in the sling or being held by someone, she’s a happy little girl!

I received news last week that my proposal to present a paper at the annual conference of BAICE (British Association of International and Comparative Education) has been accepted.  I will travel to Glasgow, Scotland in early September to present at the conference, and as one of the few student presenters, will be eligible for a cash prize.  This should be a very good networking opportunity for me and will help me get my name ‘out there’ in the field of international and comparative education.  Wish me luck!

As Jason mentioned, our postings may be fewer in the coming weeks.  We both have a lot of work to accomplish for university.  Please keep the comments and emails coming…just know that we may be very slow in replying.  Please don’t be offended or think we’ve forgotten about you.  Thanks, as always for your support!

Picture Updates

Due to popular demand, here are a few pictures of Anoush and the time we spent with Terri and Brian.

Slow News Days

Apologies for the lack of posts and pictures in recent days.  The website will be silent for the next month or so as both Terra and I are in assignment writing mode.  We have a bunch of projects that need to be finished but at the moment, all our time must be devoted to university and Anoush.  There simply is a scarcity of time.

Towards the end of May, you will hear more from us.  At that time, we finish our projects for Gavar Special School as well as the other outstanding deliverables.  If you have an urgent question, you are best to Skype us simply because our email boxes are so full that it will take weeks to respond to all the messages.

For now, I can tell you that all is well with Terra and Anoush.  Our summer plans are shaping up for our dissertations.  The fall is already looking busy as I have projects coming on-line and a possible part time job lined up.  Details to come in 28 days!
